LEIS stands for Local Energy Initiatives Encouragement. An initiative born out of the belief that our residents benefit from ownership when it comes to generating sustainable energy locally. LEIS supports regional initiatives in designing and implementing projects where residents and land users exercise influence and control in their own areas. 'If we have to realise renewable energy then, we will do it ourselves and also keep the earnings in the area.'

All municipalities in the Netherlands aim to become fully energy-neutral. This means that they must start generating as much sustainable energy themselves as is consumed locally. To this end, the government has made administrative agreements, laid down in the Regional Energy Strategy (RES).

To achieve the goals in the RES, projects for independent large-scale energy generation, such as wind and solar parks, are set up. Municipalities designate search areas where these projects should take shape. Residents, farmers/land users and neighbouring residents of a search area would do well to take the lead in developing these projects themselves. Because if you arrange it yourself, then you not only have an influence on the implementation and forms of energy, but also on how the proceeds from energy production are spent. 100% local ownership is the aim.

LEIS (Local Energy Initiatives Encouragement) supports initiators in independent regional sustainable energy projects and landscaping issues, where residents may have to get used to a changing environment, but then at least get maximum benefits from it. If it has to be done then, we do it ourselves and also keep the earnings in the environment.
